Astronomy as a Hobby: The Most Cosmic Way to Unwind
Looking up at the night sky can be a fun and rewarding experience, whether in a city with minimal stars or in a rural area where there appear to be limitless stars in the sky. There is something very inspiring about catching a glimpse of a shooting star, seeing a distant planet with your own eyes, or using a piece of equipment made of glass and plastic to see distant objects.
Stargazing and astronomy can be a free hobby that almost anyone can experience. Before investing in equipment such as telescopes, cameras, and fancy planet trackers, consider stepping out and seeing if astronomy is for you. This article will discuss why stargazing and astronomy could be a fantastic hobby for you, whether you’re on a tight budget or have money to invest in equipment.
It’s a Way To Relax
If you live in a big city, looking up at the sky could be a bit lackluster and disappointing. If you ever make your way out into more rural areas or areas with limited to no light pollution, it could become a life-changing experience. I have lived near a pretty big city my whole life, and was always fairly disappointed every time I looked up at the sky. Unfortunately, my night sky had more helicopters and planes than stars. My interest always hung around because I could at least see some stars and the moon.
My love for stargazing and astronomy took off after a trip I took far away from a city. I was able to see stars, shooting stars, and specks of distant planets. There aren’t too many things that are more beautiful than the starlit night far away from the city lights. Stargazing is also incredibly relaxing if you have a moment to stop, pull out a lawn chair or blanket, and just take in the night sky. You’ll see an assortment of stars, constellations, and in all honesty, a lit-up sky looks like a piece of art. You can get lost just looking, staring, and zoning out in the sea of specks that fill the night sky.
A Learning Experience of a Lifetime
The thing with astronomy and stargazing is that there is so much to learn in this hobby. Even if you don’t have access to clear dark skies, you could learn so much about outer space. As you’re reading through this article, professional astronomers are making discoveries about black holes, planets, and many other things the average person probably doesn’t think about. Information is getting updated almost daily, new findings are discovered, and it’s only going to continue to expand as more curious minds continue to research outer space.
If you’re curious about astronomy, now might be the best time to jump into this hobby because there’s so much information that you can get for free to expand your knowledge on the subject. There isn’t enough time in a lifetime to learn everything that’s out there. There is a branch in this hobby for every curious mind, whether one planet specifically interests you, constellations and their history catch your interest, or the idea behind black holes keeps your mind going at night. There’s a subject for everybody, and it is exciting to know there’s so much more out there than meets the eye.
Right now, the easiest place to gain access to information about outer space and astronomy is probably online. Some fantastic astronomers discuss astronomy for free. There are also plenty of social media people who specifically provide news about outer space. They might not go into deep topics you’d find in a scholarly research journal, but they can give you an idea of what to research.
Expandable and Upgradable (at your own risk)
For whatever reason, I always seem to be interested in the most expensive hobbies or at least hobbies that are subjectively expensive for me. Astronomy and space research could be free to start, but could also become a pretty expensive hobby once you get into it. I mentioned this earlier, but there are plenty of telescopes out there that help you see distant planets, but with that comes a price. There are plenty of budget telescopes that you could try, but do your research on which one to pick up because some people might get discouraged and disappointed when they purchase a very cheap telescope and don’t see anything.
Once you start this hobby, you might be interested in more niche equipment within the hobby. Oftentimes, the next step in this hobby is to begin astrophotography, and that branch of this hobby can be a very expensive beast on its own. Once you get deeper into the hobby, you’ll learn about the many niches within the hobby. There are countless branches you can explore, and I will leave that up to you to experience.
How to Start Astronomy as a Hobby
The easiest way to start your journey in the astronomy hobby is to simply go outside and look up. Even in a city, you can see the moon. If you get a little further away, you can see more stars and constellations. Whenever I am walking at night, I do my best to try and find the little and big dipper in the night sky. Consider downloading the Star Tracker app (Android)/Star Tracker app (iOS) to help get you started on finding features of the night sky.
Final Notes
Astronomy is a fantastic hobby, whether you’re looking into the history of astrology or are interested in learning how our ancestors used the sky to travel and navigate our planet. If you live in the city, you can at least see our big, beautiful moon and some stars. You’re limited to what you can see, but at least you can see something, and growing up in the city, I was at least happy to be able to see a few things. It’s a real game changer, though, once you move out to a rural area or go on a hiking adventure to see the night sky. Seeing a full sky of stars really makes you feel a certain way. I feel like a lot of the problems I think are big in life become much smaller once you realize that we are just a small piece in this enormous universe.
