Free Hobbies for Women Who Love The Outdoors

If you’re a woman who feels most alive under open skies, surrounded by nature’s beauty, you’re not alone, and the best part is, feeding that adventurous spirit doesn’t have to cost a dime. Whether you crave quiet moments by the water or heart-pumping mountain treks, there are countless ways to embrace the great outdoors without breaking the bank. In this article, we’ll explore 10 fun and completely free hobbies perfect for women who love the wild, the fresh air, and everything in between.

1. Outdoor Reading

Outdoor Reading

Reading is a classic hobby that anyone can experience. Library cards are often free to acquire; after that, you have thousands of books to read. Pair your library card with the Libby app, and you can save the trip to the library by reading books through the app. Whether you decide to read indoors or outdoors is completely your choice, but there’s nothing like sitting on a bench or in your backyard reading a book with the sun shining down on you. If you’re interested in reading books through some technological device, Kindle e-readers (affiliate link) are at your disposal for a price.

2. Flower/Leaf Pressing

Leaf and flower pressing is a craft that you don’t hear about too often. It’s a fun way to collect and preserve the leaves and flowers of different plant species. All you have to do is go out to a park, grab a leaf, bring it home, and put it between two pieces of newspaper or blotting paper. After that, you’ll want to place your newspaper/leaf sandwich between the pages of a book. Close the book and place a weight on the book to push the leaf down, essentially compressing the leaf. Wait anywhere between 2-4 weeks and check on your collection. The leaf should be completely dry and also very flat.

It’s suggested that you change the newspaper a few times throughout the process to help prevent molding and browning. Thicker specimens may take longer to dry. Also, do not use very wet specimens because you run the small risk of damaging your book. You do not want to collect specimens after a heavy rain. If you really get hooked on this hobby, you can level up your flower pressing with the Wakhow Flower Press Kit (affiliate link).

3. Hiking/Walking

Walking and hiking are fantastic and free outdoor hobbies you can experience. You do not have to go to pristine natural spaces to enjoy walking and hiking outdoors. All you need to do is put on some decent shoes, step outside, and walk. There isn’t much more to it. Walking is a great way to start your health journey by getting your blood moving. It can also be used as a way to clear your mind after a long day. Take a look at Why Walking Might Be the Best Hobby You’re Not Taking Seriously to see some more benefits to walking and why it’s a great hobby.

Hiking on Trail

I spend anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour a day walking. I either do it alone, with my dogs, or with my wife. My wife and I use walking to continue bonding through conversation. It is also great for our dogs because it keeps them moving. I’ll often walk alone to reflect on my day and to clear my head. Walking has gone from a chore during dog walks to a hobby I really enjoy.

4. Bird Watching

The only things you need to enjoy the bird watching hobby are your eyes and ears. You can find birds anywhere, so practically anyone can get to enjoy bird watching. Over time, your bird spotting skills will grow, and you may get to a point where you can identify a bird species just by the sounds it makes. I do suggest that you download the CornellLab Merlin Bird ID app for either iOS or Android. This app is a free global bird guide with photos, sounds, maps, and a boatload more features.

As your skills grow and your addiction to this hobby also continues to develop, you might want to get better eyes on the birds around you. Binoculars or spotting scopes can help you reach that goal. I use the Nikon ACULON Binocular (affiliate link), but there are many different binoculars or scopes out there that will help you spot birds and other wildlife.

5. Gardening/Indoor Plant Growing

This one may require a little more strategy to get started without funds, but there are ways to begin gardening with no investment. You can collect seeds from fruits and vegetables you buy to eat. An onion or garlic clove can be planted in the ground, and you should see growth from that. People who run community gardens are often incredibly nice and may have extra seeds or plants to give out. Another option is to offer to volunteer your time at a community garden. I highly suggest this route if you want to try gardening but don’t have the yard space to do so.

Gardening

The biggest challenge to indoor plant growing is finding pots and soil to use for free. Otherwise, people often give away plants if they’re stepping away from plant collecting. You may also have people giving away cuttings from plants they are currently growing. It’s not incredibly hard to find plant-growing communities.

6. Outdoor Meditation

Finding a good spot to meditate, where you feel completely safe and can focus can be a challenge. There may be a park bench, a spot under a tree, or a space in your backyard that will work for you. Many of us choose to meditate indoors for our safety. However, there is nothing like entering a state of peace in the great outdoors. Focusing on the sound of blowing wind during outdoor meditation is hard to beat.

7. Yoga Outdoors

Outdoor Yoga

Yoga is more than just stretching, it’s a whole practice that combines movement, breath, and sometimes meditation. If you have tried yoga in a studio or gym, consider also giving it a try outdoors. Stretching, breathing, and working on your body may feel better for you under a tree, or in an outdoor setting. There are plenty of videos on YouTube that give tips and suggestions to make your yoga experience the best it can be.

8. Outdoor Photography

Most of us have cellphones with some pretty solid photo-taking technology. Taking a picture of landscapes, close-ups of flowers, and moderately sized animals is fairly easy. Unfortunately, you likely won’t be able to snap a clear shot of a bird that is sitting on a tree branch 300 feet away. Regardless, you can take some fantastic photos of the great outdoors with just your phone camera. Your phone camera can become a gateway into a much deeper (and more expensive) photography adventure.

9. Wildlife Tracking

Tracking animals can be incredibly challenging in an urban and suburban setting. There just isn’t enough habitat to do this hobby well and consistently in these settings. It’s possible, but it might be hard to do it well. Regardless, it’s a fun hobby to try and can be quite rewarding if you enjoy learning about animal movement and behavior.

animal tracks

When I was younger, I helped restore natural spaces and aided in reintroducing native plant species in areas throughout the city. Many of these spaces were hundreds of acres. In my downtime, I would find different animal tracks and follow them around to see the behavior of different animals. I mostly tracked Deer movement, but I also followed around Coyotes and other animals that live in the Midwest. I didn’t do any formal studies on my tracking, but it was fun to do during certain times of the day.

10. Stargazing

Looking up at the night sky is free, so why not make a hobby out of looking and learning about the stars around us. There are plenty of constellations to observe. The moon shines bright, and it’s fascinating to really stare at it to see all of its craters. You may get lucky and be able to see Mars with your naked eye during certain times of the year. There is plenty to appreciate in looking at the sky without the need for telescopes or other stargazing equipment.

One thing I do suggest is to download an app such as the Star Walk 2 app, which can help you find constellations, planets, and even satellites in the sky. This app has a free and premium version, but it’s jam-packed with information to get you started in this free hobby.

Final Notes

No matter your pace, your interests, or your location, the outdoors offers endless opportunities to reconnect with nature, with others, and most importantly, with yourself. These free hobbies aren’t just pastimes; they’re invitations to breathe deeper, explore more boldly, and find joy in the simple beauty that surrounds you. Step into a world of adventure that doesn’t cost a thing, just your curiosity and a little time.
